형용사 + 전치사구(of, to, with, on, in, about, for + 명사구)

형용사가 서술적 용법으로 쓰일 때(보어로 쓰일 때)

전치사구가 형용사 뒤에 따라오는 경우가 있습니다.

이 경우 보통 be + 형용사 + 전치사구 패턴을 가집니다.

She is afraid of snakes.
그녀는 뱀을 무서워 한다.

위 문장을 자세히 살펴보면 아래와 같습니다.

• 주어(She) + 동사(is) + 형용사(afraid) + 전치사구(of snakes)
• 전치사구(of snakes)는 형용사(afraid)를 수식하는 부사 역할
• 전치사구 제외하면 주어 + 동사 + 보어(afraid)로 구성된 2형식 문장

전치사구(전치사 + 명사)는 형용사 또는 부사 역할을 하는데, 형용사 뒤에 오는 전치사구는 형용사를 수식하는 부사 역할을 한다고 볼 수 있습니다.

• 전치사구(전치사 + 명사)는 형용사 또는 부사
• 형용사 뒤의 전치사구는 부사

그래서 형용사와 전치사구를  아래와 같이 be + 형용사 + 전치사 패턴으로 묶어서 하나의 타동사(숙어)로 기억하는 경우가 많습니다. 

• 주어(She) + 동사(is afraid of) + 목적어(snakes)

이 경우 해석하기는 편하지만 이런 패턴의 조합이 너무 많아서 모두 기억하기는 어렵습니다.

형용사와 형용사를 수식하는 부사구(전명구)로 나눠서 접근하면 더 쉽게 기억할 수 있습니다.

형용사 + of  

She was proud of her son.
그녀는 아들을 자랑스러워 한다.

• 주어(She) + 동사(was) + 보어(proud) + 전명구(of her son)

You should be ashamed of your behavior.
너의 행동을 부끄러워해야 한다.

• 주어(You) + 동사(should be) + 보어(ashamed) + 전명구(of your behavior)

He was aware of the danger.
그는 위험을 알고 있었다. 

• 주어(He) + 동사(was) + 보어(aware) + 전명구(of the danger)

be + 형용사 + of 예문

형용사 + to

He was addicted to alcohol.
그는 알콜에 중독되었다.

• 주어(He) + 동사(was) + 보어(addicted) + 전명구(to alcohol)

He is very sensitive to cold.
그는 추위를 잘 탄다.

• 주어(He) + 동사(is) + 보어(very sensitive) + 전명구(to cold)

Your opinion is similar to mine.
너의 의견은 나와 비슷하다.

• 주어(Your opinion) + 동사(is) + 보어(similar) + 전명구(to mine)

One mile is approximately equal to 1.6 kilometers.
1 마일은 약 1.6km와 같다.

• 주어(One mile) + 동사(is) + 보어(approximately equal) + 전명구(to 1.6 kilometers)

I felt angry with him.
나는 그에게 화가났다.

• 주어(I) + 동사(felt) + 보어(angry) + 전명구(with him)

She is impatient with his young son.
그녀는 어린 아들에게 참을성이 없다.

• 주어(She) + 동사(is) + 보어(impatient) + 전명구(with his young son)

To be honest with you, I don’t remember what he said. 
솔직히 말하면 난 그가 한 말이 기억나지 않아.

• 동사(be) + 보어(honest) + 전명구(with you)

He is very keen on cats.
그는 고양이를 매우 좋아한다.

• 주어(He) + 동사(is) + 보어(very keen) + 전명구(on cats)

Aloe vera is very gentle on the skin.
알로에 베라는 피부에 매우 부드럽다.

• 주어(Aloe vera) + 동사(is) + 보어(very gentle) + 전명구(on the skin)

Your success is dependent on how hard you work.
너의 성공은 네가 얼마나 열심히 일 하느냐에 달려 있다.

• 주어(Your success) + 동사(is) + 보어(dependent) + 전명구(on how hard you work)

형용사 + in

We are not interested in being popular.
우리는 유명해지는 것에 관심이 없다.

• 주어(We) + 동사(are not) + 보어(interested) + 전명구(in being popular)

I was very disappointed in his decision.
나는 그의 결정에 매우 실망했다.

• 주어(I) + 동사(was) + 보어(very disappointed) + 전명구(in his decision)

I am usually successful in getting people to do what I want.
나는 보통 사람들이 내가 원하는 것을 하도록 하는 데 성공한다.(능숙하다)

• 주어(I) + 동사(am) + 보어(usually successful) + 전명구(in getting people to do what I want)

그는 그녀의 방문에 기뻐했다.
